Are consumers changing their media usage?
Aug 12th, 2007 by Pedro Meya Marty
Definitely YES. Let’s look 20 years back and remember, what medias we had that time:
- 10 TV channels, almost no private channels
- a lot of young radio stations
- every region his own newspapers, a few magazines
- no Internet
Let’s look what we have today:
- over 50 TV channels, plus access to another 100s of Pay TV channels, plus a few local TV channels
- a lot of extablished radio stations, plus a never ending list of internet radio stations. You can even have your own radiostation at last.fm
- less newspapers, but more and more magazines
- and fianlly Internet is everywhere
This comparison does not show the change of media usage, but it shows the possibilities todays consumers have. Not even mentioning new things like ingame advertising in Xbox oder Playstation Games or User Generated Content in the Web as in youtube, myspace, and of course in Second Life or other virtual worlds.
Microsoft produced a lovely commercial to accentuate this topic: The Break Up between Advertiser & Consumer.
So what you should do?
It’s summertime, so get the book “Life after the 30-Second Spot” from Joseph Jaffe and enjoy reading in sunny place and think about if the advertising you are doing has a future.
